Multiple periodic solutions to a class of nonautonomous second-order delay differential equation

Abstract

The existence of the nontrivial periodic solutions for nonautonomous second-order delay differential equation

x (t)+λx(t)=f ( t , x ( t ) , x ( t τ ) )

is investigated, where λ> π 2 / τ 2 , τ>0, f C 1 (R× R 2 ,R). Multiple periodic solutions are obtained by some recent critical point theorems.

1 Introduction

It is well known that the critical point theory is a powerful tool to deal with the multiplicity of periodic solutions to ordinary differential systems as well as partial differential equations (see [16]). In 1998, Li and He [7] first applied the critical point theory to study the multiplicity of periodic solutions for delay differential equations. Especially, in 2005, Guo and Yu [8] established a variational framework for delay differential autonomous systems. In the past several years, some results on the existence of periodic solutions for the functional differential equation have been obtained by the critical point theory (see [714]). However, most of these functional differential equations are autonomous, the results on the non-autonomous functional differential equations are relatively few (see [12, 13]).

Motivated by the work of [11, 12], we consider a class of nonautonomous second-order delay differential equation

In this paper, we have the following conditions on f.

Theorem 1.1 Assume that f satisfies (f 1)-(f 3) with (A(t)z,z)0, (B(t)z,z)>(λ π 2 / τ 2 ) | z | 2 >0 for z R 2 {0}, t[0,τ]. Then (1.1) possesses at least 2m pairs 2τ-periodic solutions, where

Z + is the set of all positive integers.

Theorem 1.2 Assume that f satisfies (f 1)-(f 3+) with (A(t)z,z)0, (B(t)z,z)<(λ π 2 m 0 2 / τ 2 ) | z | 2 <0 for z R 2 {0}, m 0 Z + , t[0,τ]. Then (1.1) possesses at least 2[ m 1 m 0 +1] pairs 2τ-periodic solutions, where

m 1 =max { j Z + : ( B ( t ) z , z ) < ( λ π 2 τ 2 j 2 ) | z | 2 < 0  for  z R 2 { 0 } , t [ 0 , τ ] } .

In this paper, the main purpose is to study the multiplicity of periodic solutions for systems (1.1) via some recent critical point theorems for strongly indefinite functionals. In order to achieve this, some preliminaries are necessary. Let X and Y be Banach spaces with X being separable and reflexive, and set E=XY. Let S X be a dense subset. For each sS, there is a semi-norm on E defined by

We denote by T S the topology on E induced by the semi-norm family { p s }, and let ω and ω denote the weak-topology and weak*-topology, respectively. Clearly, the T S topology contains the product topology on E=XY produced by the weak topology on X and the strong topology on Y.

For a functional Φ C 1 (E,R), we write Φ a ={uE:Φ(u)a}. Recall that Φ is weakly sequentially continuous if u k u in E, one has lim k Φ ( u k )v Φ ( u k )v for each vE, i.e., Φ :(E,ω)( E , ω ) is sequentially continuous. For cR, we say that Φ satisfies the ( C ) c condition if any sequence { u k }E, such that Φ( u k )c and (1+ u k ) Φ ( u k )0 as k, contains a convergent subsequence.

Suppose that

( Φ 2 ) there exist a finite dimensional subspace Y 0 Y and R>ρ such that c ¯ :=supΦ( E 0 )< and supΦ( E 0 S 0 )<infΦ( B ρ Y), where E 0 :=X Y 0 , and S 0 ={u E 0 :uR}.

The following critical point theorem will be used later (see [6, 14]).

Theorem A Assume that Φ is even and ( Φ 0 )-( Φ 2 ) are satisfied. Then Φ has at least m=dim Y 0 pairs of critical points with critical values less than or equal to c ¯ provided Φ satisfies the ( C ) c condition for all c[κ, c ¯ ].

2 Preliminaries

In this section, we establish a variational structure which enables us to reduce the existence of 2τ periodic solutions of (1.1) to a classic Hamiltonian system. First, we have the following lemma by using similar arguments [11].

Lemma 2.1 Suppose that f C 1 (R× R 2 ,R) satisfies (f 1), then the function

Lemma 2.2 For any 2τ periodic solution of (1.1), let y(t)=x(tτ), then z=(x,y) is a 2τ periodic solution of (2.2). Conversely, for any 2τ periodic solution z=(x,y) of (2.2) satisfying y(t)=x(tτ), x is a 2τ periodic solution of (1.1).

For S 1 =R/(2τZ), let C ( S 1 , R 2 ) denote the space of 2τ periodic C functions on R with values in R 2 . For any z C ( S 1 , R 2 ), it has the following Fourier expansion in the sense that it is convergent in the space L 2 ( S 1 , R 2 ),

Note that for any z=(x,y)E, y(t)=x(tτ) and H(t,z)=(f(t,x,y),f(t,y,x)). Due to the fact that f(t,x(tτ),y(tτ))=f(t,y(t),x(t)), we know that H(t,z)E whatever zE. Therefore, we have the following lemma.

Lemma 2.3 If z(t) is a critical point of φ in E, then z(t) is a critical point of φ in H 1 ( S 1 , R 2 ).

Moreover, we also denote by M + (), M () and M 0 () the positive definite, negative definite and null subspaces of the self-adjoint linear operator defining it, respectively.

In order to obtain this theorem, we apply Theorem A to the functional Φ(z). The proof of this theorem is divided into the following three steps.
