Multiplicity of solutions for singular semilinear elliptic equations in weighted Sobolev spaces

Abstract

A class of semilinear elliptic equations involving strong resonance or non-resonance is reconsidered here. The multiplicity of solutions is investigated by using the variational method, and the results complement earlier ones.

1 Introduction

In this paper we investigate the following singular semilinear problem:

In recent years, the existence and multiplicity of solutions for semilinear equations have been extensively studied by many authors (see [1]–[11]).

In 2001, Shapiro [12] studied a series of eigenvalue problems of singular quasilinear elliptic and parabolic equations in weighted Sobolev spaces, he obtained many existence results by using Galerkin method. Then Jia et al. continued to study the quasilinear elliptic equations (see [13]–[15]). However, their main results are only concerned with the existence of solutions without considering multiplicity of solutions.

Motivated by previous work, the aim of this paper is to establish the existence of infinitely many solutions of the elliptic equations in weighted Sobolev spaces, by using the Ekeland variation principle and the mountain-pass lemma.

We first assume that

Definition 1.1

We say (Ω,Γ) is a V L -region if the following two facts obtain:

( V L 1): There exists a complete orthonormal system { φ n } n = 1 in L ρ 2 (Ω), and m({xΩ φ i =0})=0. Also φ n H p , ρ 1 (Ω,Γ) C 2 (Ω).

( V L 2): There exists a sequence of eigenvalues { λ n } n = 1 with 0< λ 1 λ 2 λ 3 λ n such that L( φ n ,v)= λ n φ n , v ρ , v H p , ρ 1 (Ω,Γ). Also φ 1 >0 in Ω.

Definition 1.2

We say (Ω,Γ) is a simple V L -region if (Ω,Γ) is a V L -region and the following four conditions are satisfied:

In fact, there are many examples which use special functions to illustrate the V L -region or the simple V L -region (see [12]).

Remark 1.2

We must find the function F(x,s) satisfying (F1)-(F6). Let Ω=(0,π), λ 1 , and λ 2 be the first eigenvalue and second eigenvalue of Laplacian eigenvalue problem of homogeneous boundary condition on Ω, and the first eigenfunction be ϕ 1 =sinx. Let F(x,s)= 1 4 ( λ 2 λ 1 )(2 e s 2 1). For b 1 0, ρ1, by simple calculation, if t 0 is large enough, we find that F(x,s) satisfies (F1)-(F6).

On the other hand, if we take f(x,s)= | s | k 1 s, where 1<k< N + 1 N 1 , then f(x,s) satisfies ( F 1) and ( F 2).

The main results of our paper are given by the following theorems.

Theorem 1.1

LetΩ R N be a domain satisfying the requirements of being a V L -region. Letλ= λ 1 in (1.1). Assume thatF(x,s) C 1 ( Ω ¯ ×R,R). Furthermore, if the conditions (F1), (F3), and (F4) are satisfied, then the problem (1.1) has at least one nontrivial solution in H p , ρ 1 (Ω,Γ).

Theorem 1.2

LetΩ R N be a domain satisfying V L -region. Andλ= λ 1 in (1.1). Assume thatF(x,s) C 1 ( Ω ¯ ×R,R). Furthermore, if the conditions (F1)-(F3) and (F5) are satisfied, then the problem (1.1) has at least two nontrivial solutions in H p , ρ 1 (Ω,Γ).

Theorem 1.3

LetΩ R N be a domain satisfying simple V L -region, ( a i j )=E, andλ= λ 1 . Assume thatF(x,s) C 1 ( Ω ¯ ×R,R). Furthermore, if the conditions (F1), (F3), (F4), and (F6) are satisfied, then the problem (1.1) has at least two nontrivial solutions in H p , ρ 1 (Ω,Γ).

Theorem 1.4

LetΩ R N be a domain satisfying simple V L -region, ( a i j )=E, andλ= λ 1 . Assume thatF(x,s) C 1 ( Ω ¯ ×R,R). Furthermore, if the conditions (F1)-(F3), (F5), and (F6) are satisfied, then the problem (1.1) has at least three nontrivial solutions in H p , ρ 1 (Ω,Γ).

Theorem 1.5

LetΩ R N be a domain satisfying simple V L -region, λ< λ 1 and( a i j )=E. Assume thatF(x,s) C 1 ( Ω ¯ ×R,R). Furthermore, suppose the conditions ( F 1) and ( F 2). Then the problem (1.1) has infinitely many solutions in H p , ρ 1 (Ω,Γ).

Theorem 1.6

LetΩ R N be a domain satisfying simple V L -region, ( a i j )=E. λ= λ k (k2). Assume thatF(x,s) C 1 ( Ω ¯ ×R,R). Furthermore, suppose the conditions (F1), ( F k 1), and ( F k 2). Then the problem (1.1) has two nontrivial solutions in H p , ρ 1 (Ω,Γ).

The paper is organized as follows. In Section 2, we provide and establish some lemmas which are necessary in the proof of our main theorems. In Section 3, we will prove Theorem 1.1-Theorem 1.5. In the last section, we establish Lemma 4.1 and Lemma 4.2, and we give the proof of Theorem 1.6.

2 Preliminary results

In this section, we prove some lemmas which will be used in the proof of our main theorems. For simplicity, we denote I λ () by I() in the following.

Lemma 2.1

Let L be defined as (1.2). Then

To get Lemma 2.7 and Lemma 2.8, we first introduce a corollary of the Ekeland variation principle (see [16], Theorem 2.4).

Lemma 2.2

Let X be a Banach space. Assume thatE C 1 (X,R)is bounded from below, which satisfies the ( PS ) c condition. Thenc= inf x X E(x)is a critical value.

Lemma 2.3

Assume that L is given by (1.2), and the assumptions (L1)-(L5) hold, and that(Ω,Γ)is a V L -region. Then H p , ρ 1 (Ω,Γ)is compactly embedding in L ρ 2 . Moreover, if(Ω,Γ)is a simple V L -region and( a i j )=E, then forN2, H p , ρ 1 (Ω,Γ)is compactly embedded in L ρ θ , 2<θ< 2 N N 1 .

Proof

See Lemma 2 and Theorem 9 in [12]. □

To establish the multiplicity of solutions for problem (1.1), we need to apply the following fundamental theorem (see [17], Theorem 9.12).

Lemma 2.4

Let X be an infinite-dimensional Banach space and letE:XRbe continuous, even and satisfying ( PS ) c for everycR. Assume, also, that:

Next, we describe some results under the geometry for functional I.

Lemma 2.5

Under hypotheses (F1) and (F2), (Ω,Γ)is a V L -region, the functional I has the following saddle geometry forλ= λ 1 :

Next, we will prove the Palais-Smale properties for the functional I. We recall that I:ER satisfies the Palais-Smale conditions at the level cR ( ( PS ) c in short). For any sequence { h n }E such that

Lemma 2.6

Assume the condition (F1) holds, λ= λ 1 , and(Ω,Γ)is a V L -region. Then the functional I has the ( PS ) c conditions wheneverc<min{ Ω T + ρ, Ω T ρ}orc>max{ Ω S + ρ, Ω S ρ}.

Proof

We only prove the lemma for c<min{ Ω T + ρ, Ω T ρ}. For the case c>max{ Ω S + ρ, Ω S ρ}, we can use similar methods.

Lemma 2.7

Suppose that (F1) and (F6) are satisfied, λ= λ 1 and(Ω,Γ)is a simple V L -region. Then the origin is a local minimum for the functional I.

Proof

From (1.4), it is easy to see that I(0)=0. By (F6), we can choose q(2, 2 N N 1 ) and a constant C>0 such that

Lemma 2.8

Let the hypotheses (F1), (F3), (F4), and (F6) hold, λ= λ 1 and let(Ω,Γ)be a V L -region. Then there exists u 0 H p , ρ 1 (Ω,Γ)such thatI( u 0 )<0and u 0 p , ρ >r, where r is given by Lemma  2.7.

Proof

By (F1) and (F4), we take u 0 = t 0 φ 1 where t 0 is provided by (F4). Thus, we obtain

Lemma 2.9

If hypotheses (F1), (F3), and (F4) are satisfied, λ= λ 1 and(Ω,Γ)is a V L -region. Then problem (1.1) has at least one nontrivial solution u 0 H p , ρ 1 (Ω,Γ). Moreover, u 0 has negative energy, i.e. I( u 0 )<0.

Proof

By (F1) and Remark 1.1, we have

Therefore, the functional I is bounded below. In this case, we would like to mention that the functional I satisfies the ( PS ) c conditions with c=inf{I(h):h H p , ρ 1 (Ω,Γ)}. To see this, by Lemma 2.6, we take t 0 R provided by (F4), we obtain

To prove Theorem 1.3, we establish the following lemma.

Lemma 2.10

Assume that the conditions (F1), (F2), (F3), and (F5) are satisfied, λ= λ 1 and(Ω,Γ)is a V L -region. Then the problem (1.1) has at least two nontrivial solutions with negative energy.

Proof

Define

Firstly, we consider the functionals I ± =I | M ± . By the assumption (F4), we have

In this way, by using Lemma 2.2 for the functionals I + and I , we obtain two critical points denoted by u 0 + and u 0 , respectively. Thus, we have c + = I + ( u 0 + )= inf h M + {I(h)} and c = I ( u 0 )= inf h M {I(h)}.

Moreover, we affirm that u 0 + and u 0 are nonzero critical points. Based on (F3) and (F5), we obtain

Next, we prove that u 0 + and u 0 are distinct. The proof of this affirmation is by contradiction. If u 0 + = u 0 , then u 0 + = u 0 V 1 . By (2.6), we obtain I( u 0 + )<0I( u 0 + ). Therefore, we have a contradiction. Consequently, we get u 0 + u 0 . Thus the problem (1.1) has at least two nontrivial solutions. Moreover, these solutions have negative energy. □

To prove Theorem 1.5, we need the following lemma. The proof is similar to that of Lemma 2.6.

Lemma 2.11

Assume that the conditions ( F 1) and ( F 2) hold, λ< λ 1 , ( a i j )=Eand(Ω,Γ)is a simple V L -region. Then functional I satisfies the ( PS ) c conditions.

3 Proofs of Theorem 1.1-Theorem 1.5

In this section, we prove Theorems 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5.

Proof of Theorem 1.1

By Lemma 2.9, we get a solution u 0 which satisfies I( u 0 )<0. It follows that the problem (1.1) has at least one nontrivial solution. The proof is completed. □

Proof of Theorem 1.2

Using Lemma 2.10, we obtain two distinct critical points u 0 + and u 0 such that I( u 0 + )<0 and I( u 0 )<0. Therefore, the problem (1.1) has at least two nontrivial solutions. The proof is completed. □

Proof of Theorem 1.3

From Lemma 2.7 and Lemma 2.8, we know that the functional I satisfies the geometric conditions of the mountain-pass theorem. Moreover, the functional I satisfies the ( PS ) c conditions for all c0. Thus, we have a solution u 2 H p , ρ 1 (Ω,Γ) given by the mountain-pass theorem. Obviously, the solution u 2 satisfies I( u 2 )>0.

On the other hand, by Lemma 2.9, we get another solution u 0 satisfying I( u 0 )<0. It follows that the problem (1.1) has at least two nontrivial solutions. □

Proof of Theorem 1.4

The conditions (F1), (F3), (F5), and (F6) imply that Lemma 2.7 and Lemma 2.8 hold. Thus, we have one solution u 2 which satisfies I( u 2 )>0.

On the other hand, using Lemma 2.10, we obtain two distinct critical points u 0 ± such that I( u 0 ± )<0. In other words, the problem (1.1) has at least three nontrivial solutions. The proof is completed. □

Proof of Theorem 1.5

It is easy to see that functional I is continuous and even. Moreover, by Lemma 2.11, I satisfies ( PS ) c condition for every cR. To prove Theorem 1.6, we only need to test and verify the conditions (1) and (2) in Lemma 2.4.

4 Proof of Theorem 1.6

In this section, we consider the problem (1.1) in λ= λ k . In order to prove Theorem 1.6, we first establish the following lemmas.

Lemma 4.1

Proof

Proof
